Mattel Turns Frida Kahlo & 16 Other Strong Female Role Models Into Barbie® Dolls
By Yoon Sann Wong, 08 Mar 2018
Mattel has announced a commanding new lineup of Barbie® dolls in celebration of International Women’s Day (IWD) that falls on 8 March 2018.
According to a 2018 online survey commissioned by Mattel and piloted by market research company OnePoll, the company found that “86% of moms surveyed [were] worried about the kind of role models their daughters are [being] exposed to.”
“[Y]ou can’t be what you can’t see,” explained Lisa McKnight, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Barbie® inside a press release. “Girls have always been able to play out different roles and careers with Barbie® and we are thrilled to shine a light on real life role models to remind them that they can be anything.”
The collection, which comprises 17 designs, is categorized into two groups. The first being its ‘Inspiring Women™’ series that honors late legends Amelia Earhart, Frida Kahlo, and Katherine Johnson.
The second expands on its existing ‘Shero Dolls’ line that honors women who continue to break boundaries today. The 14 modern-day role models include 2018 Winter Olympics snowboarding champion Chloe Kim—who at 17 years old became the youngest woman to win the Olympic snowboarding medal in the women’s half pipe category—Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins, Great Britain’s most successful female boxer of all time Nicola Adams, and many more.
You can see more names from the lineup of female role models below, including individuals who have inspired previous Barbie® doll designs such as Ibtihaj Muhammad, Misty Copeland, Ava DuVernay, Eva Chen and Ashley Graham.
