BlackBerry is taking legal action against Facebook over messaging patent infringements. BlackBerry argues that many features found within Facebook’s messaging tool, as well as the brand’s wholly owned subsidiaries—Instagram and Whatsapp—are based on patented technology created by BlackBerry.
The lawsuit states that Facebook has “created mobile messaging applications that coopt BlackBerry’s innovations, using a number of the innovative security, user interface, and functionality-enhancing features that made BlackBerry’s products such a critical and commercial success in the first place.”
A total of seven software patents have been highlighted in the suit, which BlackBerry is using to pursue injunctive relief and loss of profits. The exact amount was not specified.
BlackBerry said that it respects Facebook and the apps that it has created, and wishes the company could partner with BlackBerry in its goal of heading towards a more “securely connected future.”
Facebook, however, intends to fight this matter. Facebook’s general counsel Paul Grewal explained that BlackBerry is seeking to tax the innovation of other companies after failing to innovate on its own, and that the suit reflects the present, dismal state of its messaging service.
This is not the first time BlackBerry has taken legal action against other companies. In 2017, BlackBerry sued Nokia for patent infringement.
