Melania Trump has found herself under the spotlight for seemingly ripping off a pamphlet design, which was first published by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) during the Obama administration.
The brochure was released as part of Melania’s ‘Be Best’ campaign, which addresses cyberbullying and drug abuse.
It was shared on the campaign’s website and initially stated, “Parents, click here to read ‘Talking with Kids about Being Online,’ a booklet by First Lady Melania Trump and the Federal Trade Commission.”
The words, however, were later changed to “Parents, click here to read ‘Talking with Kids about Being Online,’ a Federal Trade Commission booklet, promoted by First Lady Melania Trump.”
The alteration came a little too late as people had already noticed that Melania’s brochure bears uncanny resemblance to the brochure that was released in 2014, titled Net Cetera—Chatting with Kids About Being Online.
The First Lady’s pamphlet and the 2014 brochure also carry similar graphics and design. Only minor changes were made, such as in the introduction and to words, for instance from “Sexting: Don’t Do It” to “Sexting.”
Retired Congress member John Dingell took to Twitter to advise the First Lady to “Plagiarize Better.”
The White House has stepped in to criticize the “opposition media” for focusing on the booklet. It explained that Melania was taking the initiative to promote her ‘Be Best’ campaign and spread kindness through her platform.
The First Lady’s office censured the media for “lob baseless accusations towards the First Lady,” when it should be, instead, supporting her campaign. The team also explained that the office would continue to help children and run the programs that Melania had highlighted in her speech.
Fun fact: The White House trumpets “Talking with Kids about Being Online" as "a booklet by First Lady Melania Trump and the Federal Trade Commission." Except for an intro, it's exactly the same thing Obama's FTC put out. pic.twitter.com/AEf6F0gBbt— The Rude Pundit (@rudepundit) May 7, 2018
As @rudepundit points out Melania's guide to teaching kids about the internet is very similar to one put out by the Obama admin. But there are some changes... https://t.co/5AxqYmuyWL pic.twitter.com/wRyzZvuEwL— Sarah Mimms (@SarahMMimms) May 7, 2018
