BBC Faces Ire For Seemingly Racist Depiction Of ‘Meghan Markle’ As A Cartoon
By Yimin Huang, 25 Jun 2019
The BBC is under fire for a cartoon portrayal of Meghan Markle that audiences have perceived to display unflattering, seemingly racist traits.
The controversial segment features a caricature of the Duchess of Sussex as she threatens to “cut” sister-in-law Kate Middleton.
Viewers have expressed their discomfort at the depiction, which they see as a problematic black stereotype, since Markle is biracial and has an African-American mother.
The cartoon ‘Markle’ is seen to overreact when Middleton uses her hairbrush without permission, threatening her with profanity, “Stay the f**k out of my trailer or I’ll cut you, Kate.”
Anita Singh from The Telegraph even claims the BBC episode portrays Markle as “trailer trash” American.
Fans of the Duchess have taken to Twitter to voice their criticism. Many have chastised BBC for darkening Markle’s skin tone for the aggressive scene, calling the caricature “disgusting.”
Both the BBC and the writer of the segment have stood by the cartoon despite massive backlash. Writer Gbemisola Ikunelo explains that the portrayal is meant to be “satirical” and seeks to contrast the cartoon ‘Markle’ with the agreeable one in real life.
Ikunelo also asserts that she will not censor cartoon Markle’s legitimate feelings, and believes Markle has “as much a right to show anger as anyone else.”

Instead of sharing the disgusting image of that caricature, lauch a complaint to the BBC! This needs to stop now. The vile and racist abuse Meghan receives on a daily basis by the press and the UK is disgusting and something really needs to be done!— Nat. (@meghnxmarkle) June 22, 2019
The @RoyalFamily would NEVER allow a comedy show with Kate as the baddie who threatens to knife another royal but yet they are cool with the @BBC show about Meghan portraying the stereotypes that white people have for black women like aggressive & intimidating 🤔 #MeghanMarkle— Connie_1990 (@Connie19901) June 22, 2019
Going from veiled racism to open racism: Did the BBC really darken Meghan Markle's skin for a cartoon where she speaks caricatured language and threatens to knife Kate Middleton? Somebody tell me this is fake news. https://t.co/bdDVNgo2z0 via @telegraphnews #bbc #racism— Anne-Marie O'Connor (@theladyingold) June 24, 2019
