Makeup brand Benefit Cosmetics’ new advert is 50 shades of naughty, and as a result, has received a mixed bag of responses.
Earlier this month, Benefit Cosmetics Australia’s Instagram account posted a surprising animation of two new products, the ‘Hello Happy Flawless Brightening Foundation’ and ‘Hello Happy Velvet Powder’, getting it on in bed.
In the clip, the powdered product is shown “undressing” the liquid foundation by tossing away the latter’s cap. The two then make no haste in getting passionate.
As cheeky as the scene might already be, the liquid foundation later squirts out product from its tip, presumably a metaphor for ejaculation.
In its caption, the label encourages customers to pick up the “hot and heavy and happy… feel-good foundations that promise a happy ending to your complexion.”
For the most part, followers of the brand have been thoroughly amused by the ad, flooding its comments section with laughing emojis.
On the flip side, a good number of viewers have expressed discomfort, and questioned why the makeup products were associated with sexual intercourse. “This is disgusting,” writes one Instagram user. Others have remarked that the concept seemingly “cheapened” the brand.
“Shame on you, Benefit,” one annoyed shopper comments. “It’s makeup you’re supposed to be advertising. Keep that in mind.”
“Cheeky is in our DNA,” the brand responds, thanking followers in support of the lighthearted commercial. It has also apologized to those who didn’t like it, writing, “We’re all about being cheeky about our feel-good/happy foundations but meant no offence.”
