Food plays a huge part when it comes to traveling. A country’s culture, tradition and values speak volumes through cuisine. Now, Airbnb is upping the ante by giving travelers the option to cook with various communities to gain the most authentic experience.
Airbnb’s new Cooking on Experiences are available in over 75 countries, giving travel enthusiasts the opportunity to experience a culture through food. The platform ensures that local dishes, recipes and traditions are preserved respectfully through its partnership with Slow Food, a grassroots organization that works on preventing the disappearance of local foods and traditions. According to the home-sharing company, each booking option goes through proper vetting procedures by Slow Food to ensure the recipes authentically represent the specific region.
The wide array of over 1,900 cooking experiences and 3,000 unique recipes ranges from “rolling pasta with an Italian grandma” to “prepping Portuguese with a drag queen. There are also popup sessions with local celebrities, which will be made available from time to time.
These food expeditions follow top-notch guidelines of food sustainability and biodiversity protection. The pricing comes down to the hours of commitment and the people who are conducting the lessons, which vary from locals to professional chefs.
Airbnb’s CEO and Co-Founder Brian Chesky says in a press release that the Cooking on Experiences option will hopefully help unlock cultures and form connections through travel and food.
Chesky explains that “the tradition of people coming together to make and share meals” will help support “unique recipes that are shared within family kitchens around the world.” Find out more about the program here.
