It’s no secret that a photo’s quality gets worse when you share it on social media. While most people might not care about—or even notice—the difference, what happens when the same image gets uploaded repeatedly?
Austrian photographer Janick Entremont took Instagram’s compression algorithms to their limits by uploading his portrait on the platform, and then repeating the step 339 times.
The results are appalling. Around midpoint, Entremont’s face gets completely lost in a mess of squiggly black and white lines and pink blobs.
The photographer documented each result under the @facetinction handle. Have a glance at how much the photo evolved—or rather, deteriorated—below.
Of course, photo compression applies to images uploaded through Instagram’s stories feature too, but the good news is that there’s an easy workaround for that. Here’s a hack to retain the quality of photos uploaded on Instagram stories.
