Adorable looks aside, part of Baby Yoda’s appeal is his voice, most especially his human-like giggles.
If you’ve felt like a protective parent of the star of The Mandalorian series, that’s probably because creator Jon Favreau wanted his voice to be more “relatable.” Before, the Child’s sound was more animal-like.
Sound editor David Acord told the Hollywood Reporter that Baby Yoda’s voice was originally the combination of a bat-eared fox and a kinkajou from a wildlife rescue outside of San Diego that “had this really cute, almost childlike quality to them.”
However, Favreau believed the character needed to be “more human-sounding or something a little more relatable.” The animal sounds were therefore “dialed way back,” and only some were left behind for “little grunts and coos and purrings.”
Acord added that for moments Baby Yoda was “really fussy and that kind of thing,” real baby tracks were used.
