Album cover art is a visual representation of the music that a listener can expect to hear. There has been a plethora of stunning cover art over the years.
Muse By CLIO has enlisted members of Universal Music Group Creative, East Coast Labels, which includes Republic Records, Island Records, Def Jam Recordings and Verve Label Group, to pick their favorite album artworks. Here are some of them.
Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon (1973)
Senior vice president of creative services, Sandra Brummels, picked out the iconic Dark Side of the Moon album by Pink Floyd. The artwork was created by design group Hipgnosis and Storm Thorgerson. She applauded Thorgerson’s ability to showcase a prism breaking light into colors without the use of Photoshop back then.
The Beatles’ Revolver (1966)
Creative director Joe Spix picked out The Beatles’ Revolver album art. Spix sang praises to how designer Klaus Voormann had beautifully merged photography and ink drawings together without the use of any colors or over-the-top sans-serif fonts.
Royal Blood’s Royal Blood (2014)
Royal Blood’s eponymous album artwork was creative director Ryan Rogers’ choice. He appreciates designer Dan Hillier’s way of showcasing mysticism that best represented the music the band had poured into the album.
Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures (1979)
Joy Division’s prolific Unknown Pleasures was another one of Rogers’ choice. It excluded the band’s name or album title to allow the inverted photo of a radio wave from pulsar B1919+21 to speak volumes of the band’s music. The designer Peter Saville himself claimed that the artwork offered “endless possible interpretations.”
Pearl Jam’s No Code (1966)
Spix also selected Pearl Jam’s No Code album cover as one of his favorites as it was bold for the designers, Barry Ament, Chris McGann, Jerome Turner, to display polaroids in their viscerally raw and authentic forms.
